Anderson cooper beaten for being gay
C ongratulations, Anderson Cooper, on finally coming out of the closet. This is a big day for you, a day when you can finally leave the converted firehouse you share with your live-in boyfriend with your head held high and, for the first time, not worry about what people may be writing about your relationship. It is also a great day for gay people around the world, a day when we get another successful gay man to combat negative stereotypes and ignorant bigotry. Even with his notorious giggle , who better than the "silver fox" to increase the visibility in the fight for gay civil rights. This guy is a walking, talking "It Gets Better" video.

Anderson Cooper: 'Being gay is one of the blessings of my life' - CNN
Anderson Cooper is opening up about when he realized he was gay — and when he "really, truly accepted it. Something was different," he said, responding to someone who asked him how he learned to accept being gay and how old he was when he did. The news anchor said that while he had told people in high school, it wasn't until after college that he "came around to really loving the fact that I was gay. Cooper said he was interested in joining the military, but couldn't, and felt limited in places he could travel for "safety reasons. All those things which weren't possible at the time. And I think that can be very valuable, and can impact how you treat other people, and how you see things.

It saddens me to think that I did give that impression because I think being gay is a blessing and it's something I am thankful for every single day and have been my entire adult life. I couldn't be more proud of being gay," Cooper said of coming out in an e-mail to Andrew Sullivan this past summer. Cooper noted that receiving the Vito Russo Award presented to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality has "tremendous meaning. Cooper went on to say he is a "huge fan" of Madonna and was "stunned" when it was announced that she would present him with the Award on stage. Signorile and Cooper discuss some of the LGBT stories Cooper has covered throughout his career, coming out both personally and professionally and Cooper also talks about the effect his brother's death by suicide had on his own choice to become a journalist.

Anderson, I haven't been that afraid for anyone in a very long time. You, your cameraman and your producer are very dedicated and brave people. So is your mom.
